
Five Elements vs. Four Elements: The Fundamental Difference Between Two Worldviews
A comparison of the Western Four Elements and the Chinese Five Elements, explaining why one describes material composition while the other describes movement, change, and relationships.
If you have encountered both Western philosophy and Chinese philosophy, you may naturally feel tempted to compare the Western “Four Elements” — Earth, Air, Fire, and Water — with the Chinese “Five Elements” — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. One has four, the other has five. It sounds as if they are more or less the same thing, with just one extra element.
This is a very common misunderstanding.
In fact, the “Four Elements” and the “Five Elements” do not represent the same kind of question at all. They are not different because one has four and the other has five. They are two completely different worldviews.
The Western Four Elements: What Is the World Made Of?
The classical formulation of the ancient Greek theory of the Four Elements comes from Empedocles, around 495–435 BCE, and was later systematized by Aristotle. The question it tries to answer is:
“What are all things in the world made of at the most basic level?”
The answer is: four “roots” — Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. These four elements combine in different proportions to form everything in the world: stones, trees, animals, human beings — all are different combinations of these four basic materials.
The essence of this way of thinking is reductionism: breaking complex things down into their simplest components. It is similar to how chemists today say that all things are made of the chemical elements in the periodic table. For the Greeks, the Four Elements were the “chemical elements” of their time.
In Aristotle’s system, the Four Elements also correspond to four basic qualities:

Each element is formed by the combination of two basic qualities, and the elements can transform into one another through changes in these qualities.
In addition, the Four Elements also correspond to four “natural places”: Earth sinks downward toward the center of the cosmos; Water rests above it; Air rises above Water; and Fire occupies the highest position, near the celestial sphere. The movement of objects is understood as a return to their own “natural place.” This framework dominated Western science for nearly two thousand years, until it was overturned by modern chemistry and physics.
So the theory of the Four Elements is concerned with composition — what “things” the world is assembled from.
The Chinese Five Elements: How Does the World Change?
The Chinese Five Elements answer a completely different question:
“How do all things in the world move, change, and interact?”
The answer is: five dynamic patterns — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
As we have already discussed, the original meaning of Xing is “walking,” “operating,” or “flowing.” The Five Elements are not concerned with “what materials things are made of,” but with “how things move.”

To make the difference between the Chinese and Western frameworks clearer, here is a comparison:

So in the Five Elements, Wood is not a tree, Fire is not a flame, Earth is not soil, Metal is not metal, and Water is not H₂O. They are five kinds of “movement tendencies.” When all things grow in spring, that is Wood in operation. When all things are stored and hidden in winter, that is Water in operation.
Why Do the Five Elements Include “Wood” and “Metal,” but Not “Air”?
This is one of the most confusing questions for Western readers: the Greek Four Elements include “Air,” but the Chinese Five Elements do not. Instead, they include Wood and Metal.
The answer is already contained in the comparison above: the Five Elements are not a “list of materials that make up the world.”
The Greek Four Elements need Air because air is a physical substance that exists, even though it is not directly visible to the eye. It is one of the “things” that make up the world.
But the Five Elements are not concerned with “what things exist.” They are concerned with “what kinds of movement exist.” Let us look at them one by one.
The selection standard of the Five Elements is “typical representatives of states of movement”:
* Wood represents “the movement of growth extending outward.” When you look at a tree, it breaks through the soil from a seed and extends its branches in all directions. This is the best image of growth and expansion.
* Fire represents “the movement of heat rushing upward.” Flames always rise upward, bringing light and heat. This is the best image of blazing upward.
* Earth represents “the movement of stable bearing and transformation.” The earth silently supports all things, and crops grow and mature within it. This is the best image of nurturing and transformation.
* Metal represents “the movement of inward gathering and descending.” Metal is heavy, dense, and descends downward. It can also be melted and cast, obeying transformation. This is the best image of following change and descending purification.
* Water represents “the movement of flowing downward and moistening.” Water always flows to lower places and nourishes all things. This is the best image of moistening downward.
So why is “Air” not included?
Because air does not correspond to any one distinct state of movement. Air is everywhere, and it has no fixed direction of movement. It is not clearly “upward” — Fire is. It is not clearly “downward” — Water is. It is not “expanding outward” — Wood is. It is not “gathering inward” — Metal is. It is not “stable and bearing” — Earth is. Air is the background, not a typical “mode of movement.”
In other words: the Five Elements select the main characters of the action, not the materials of the scenery. Air is scenery, not a main character.
“Emptiness” has its own place in the Five Element system
Going one step further, the Five Element system has not forgotten the existence of “emptiness” or “air.” Rather, it places it on another level.
In Chinese philosophy, the concept more fundamental than the Five Elements is Qi — the basic energy or material force that constitutes the universe. When Qi condenses, it becomes visible and formed; when it disperses, it becomes invisible emptiness. But Qi itself is not divided into the Five Elements. It is the “One,” the background and carrier through which the Five Elements operate.
Each Xing in the Five Elements is a state of movement that Qi takes under specific conditions:
Qi is the dancer; the Five Elements are five kinds of dance steps.
So it is not that the Five Elements forgot air. Rather, the place of “air” is not on the level of the Five Elements. It belongs to the more fundamental level of Qi. This is like asking, “Why is ‘energy’ not listed in the periodic table of chemical elements?” Because energy and matter are not on the same level of classification.
A Concrete Summary
To summarize the two worldviews in one sentence:
The Western theory of the Four Elements asks: “What ingredients were used to make this dish?” The Chinese theory of the Five Elements asks: “What cooking methods were used to make this dish?”
Ingredients, like the Four Elements, are static, stackable, and separable. Cooking methods, like the Five Elements, are dynamic, interactive, and concerned with rhythm and timing.
The Four Elements can exist independently. A pile of earth sitting there is still earth. But none of the Five Elements can truly exist in isolation. The growth of Wood requires the nourishment of Water and the support of Earth. The burning of Fire requires the supply of Wood. The contraction of Metal requires the nurturing of Earth. The flow of Water requires the descending purification of Metal to bring it forth. Without the other four, no single Xing can truly be a Xing.
This is why the core of the Five Elements is not “five things,” but five kinds of relationships — generation, control, overacting, and counteracting. Each relationship is a dynamic bond. The Five Elements form a complete network of relationships. Remove any one Xing, and the entire network collapses.
