Why Birth Time Matters in BaZi
In the BaZi system, birth time determines the final pillar of the Four Pillars: the Hour Pillar.
The Year Pillar represents ancestors and early environment, the Month Pillar represents parents and youth, the Day Pillar represents you yourself, and the Hour Pillar represents children, later life, and the final direction of a person’s life. If any one of the Four Pillars is missing, the chart is incomplete.
When discussing chart construction, Yuanhai Ziping clearly includes the “hour” as one of the Four Pillars, emphasizing the necessity of the birth hour in a complete chart. The Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of the Hour Pillar must be calculated according to the Day Stem and the specific birth hour. This follows a fixed rule, known as the Five Rats Escaping method, and is not assigned randomly.
Therefore: without an accurate birth time, the Hour Pillar cannot be determined; without the Hour Pillar, there is no complete BaZi chart.
What Is the Hour Pillar?
The Hour Pillar is the fourth pillar in a BaZi chart. It is composed of two characters: the Hour Stem and the Hour Branch.
It represents the energetic state of Heaven and Earth at the moment of birth. In traditional theory, the Hour Pillar is associated with later-life fortune, children, and the direction of achievement in the later stages of life.
Within the Four Pillars structure, the Year Pillar is the “root,” the Month Pillar is the “sprout,” the Day Pillar is the “flower,” and the Hour Pillar is the “fruit.” The Hour Pillar is the final link in the Four Pillars and an indispensable part of the complete chart.
Why Birthplace Also Matters
Birthplace is used to determine three things:
1. Time zone — different time zones use different standard times.
2. Longitude — used to calculate the local mean time of the birthplace.
3. True solar time — used to convert standard clock time into the actual local solar time.
Two people born at the same clock time on the same day in Beijing and London may not share the same local solar time.
China spans about 62 degrees of longitude, creating a difference of more than four hours from east to west. Under the same “Beijing time,” sunrise in Kashgar, Xinjiang may be about two hours later than sunrise in Fuyuan, Heilongjiang. If a BaZi chart is calculated directly from clock time without longitude adjustment, the Hour Pillar may be wrong.

Clock Time vs. True Solar Time
Clock time is a standard time system created for everyday convenience. Different countries and regions use different time zone standards.
True solar time is the actual local solar time. When the sun is highest in the sky, it corresponds to noon; when the sun is farthest below the horizon, it corresponds to midnight. This depends on the local longitude and the sun’s actual apparent movement on that day.
The difference between clock time and true solar time may reach dozens of minutes. In BaZi chart calculation, true solar time is used rather than clock time.

When Can True Solar Time Change the Chart?
In traditional Chinese timekeeping, each two-hour period can be divided into an early and central phase. For example, the Wu hour can be divided into early Wu and central Wu. When the birth time is close to the boundary between two Chinese hours, even a small adjustment may affect the Hour Pillar.
If someone’s clock birth time is close to the boundary between two hours — for example, between 10:50 a.m. and 11:10 a.m., near the transition between Si hour and Wu hour — the true solar time correction may shift the birth time from Si hour to Wu hour, or the reverse.
This may look like a small difference, but because the Heavenly Stem of the Hour Pillar is calculated from both the Day Master and the birth hour, a change in the Hour Pillar changes the composition of the eight characters in the chart. This can then affect all later analysis, including Five Element relationships, strength evaluation, and Supportive Elements.
So birth city is not merely an address field. It directly affects the accuracy of your BaZi chart.
What If You Do Not Know the Exact Birth Time?
If you do not know your exact birth time, a chart can still be generated, but the accuracy of the result will be affected.
Best case: the birth time is accurate to the minute. This allows the most accurate chart to be generated.
If you only know an approximate time: for example, “morning,” “afternoon,” or “around dinner time,” the chart can be estimated, but the Hour Pillar may be inaccurate. It is best to choose the closest possible Chinese hour and understand that the Hour Pillar interpretation may contain some deviation.
If you do not know the birth time at all: some chart tools may default to Zi hour or Wu hour, but this may differ greatly from the actual situation.
