How to Find Your Five Element
A practical guide to finding your Five Element through BaZi, explaining why your true element comes from the Day Master of your birth day rather than your zodiac animal.
If you have some understanding of Chinese destiny analysis, you may already know the concept of the Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. You may also want to know: Which one do I belong to?
If you ask someone else, many people may tell you: “Look at your zodiac animal. Each zodiac animal corresponds to an element.” For example, people born in the years of the Tiger or Rabbit are “Wood,” while people born in the years of the Snake or Horse are “Fire.” It sounds simple, right?
But this answer is wrong.
The zodiac animal, or Earthly Branch, does indeed have a Five Element attribute. But it does not represent “you.” It represents the yearly environment into which you were born. The element that truly represents you yourself is called the Day Master. It comes from your birth day, not your birth year.
This article will guide you step by step to find your Day Master and understand what it means for you.
1. First Forget the Zodiac Animal and Find Your “Day Pillar”
In Chinese destiny analysis, especially in BaZi, a person’s birth time is converted into four sets of symbols: the Year Pillar, Month Pillar, Day Pillar, and Hour Pillar. Each set consists of one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. Together, they form eight characters — this is where the name BaZi, or “Eight Characters,” comes from.
Among them, the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar is the Day Master. It represents you yourself.
| Four Pillars | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Year Pillar | The yearly environment into which you were born |
| Month Pillar | The seasonal environment into which you were born |
| Day Pillar | You yourself, the core |
| Hour Pillar | The hourly environment into which you were born |
The Day Pillar consists of two characters: Heavenly Stem + Earthly Branch. The Heavenly Stem represents your core Five Element, while the Earthly Branch represents the foundation beneath you. Together, they form the complete “you” — but the most important part is always the Heavenly Stem.
The zodiac animal is only your Year Branch. It is your background, not your core.
2. The Ten Heavenly Stems: Your Elemental Belonging
There are ten Heavenly Stems in total. They are divided into five groups, with each group corresponding to one of the Five Elements and further divided into Yin and Yang.
Now, find the Heavenly Stem of your birth day and compare it with the table below:
| If your Day Stem is... | Your Element is... | Yin-Yang |
|---|---|---|
| Jia or Yi | Wood | Jia is Yang, Yi is Yin |
| Bing or Ding | Fire | Bing is Yang, Ding is Yin |
| Wu or Ji | Earth | Wu is Yang, Ji is Yin |
| Geng or Xin | Metal | Geng is Yang, Xin is Yin |
| Ren or Gui | Water | Ren is Yang, Gui is Yin |
For example:
* If your Day Pillar is Jia Wu, then Jia belongs to Wood, so you are Yang Wood.
* If your Day Pillar is Ji Wei, then Ji belongs to Earth, so you are Yin Earth.
It is that simple. Your core Five Element is the element corresponding to the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar.
But here is the problem: most people do not know what their Day Pillar is. Unlike the zodiac animal, which almost everyone knows, the Day Pillar requires converting your Gregorian birthday into the traditional Chinese Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch calendar.
How can you find it?
* If you have a Chinese almanac, you can look up the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch for each day.
* A more convenient method is to use an online BaZi calculator. Enter your birth year, month, day, and hour, and the system will automatically calculate your Four Pillars.
Note: BaZi calculation uses the Chinese solar-term calendar, not the Gregorian calendar and not the ordinary lunar calendar. The Beginning of Spring, usually around February 4, marks the boundary of the Year Pillar, and each solar term, such as Jingzhe or Qingming, marks the boundary of the Month Pillar. So you should use a professional BaZi calculator rather than casually calculating from an ordinary calendar by yourself.

3. The Day Master Is Not Everything: Your Five Element Structure
Knowing your Day Master is only the first step — in fact, it may be the simplest step. The truly valuable information is not “what element I belong to,” but “what my Five Element structure looks like.”
Let us use another example.
Suppose two people both have Jia Wood, or Yang Wood, as their Day Master:
* Person A’s BaZi: The Day Master is Jia Wood, and there is Water around it, which generates Wood, as well as Wood, which supports it as the same element. Jia Wood was born in spring, and the environment supports and nourishes it. This person’s Wood Qi is abundant. They are usually proactive, action-oriented, and full of vitality.
* Person B’s BaZi: The Day Master is also Jia Wood, but the surrounding elements are mostly Metal, which controls Wood, and Fire, which Wood generates and therefore drains Wood Qi. Jia Wood was born in autumn, and the surrounding energy is restraining and consuming it. This person’s Wood Qi is weak. They may be more prone to fatigue, lack of action, and a need for more external support.
Do you see the difference? The same Day Master, Jia Wood, can be in completely different states in different BaZi charts.
This is why I say that knowing your Day Master is the starting point, not the endpoint. What truly determines your energetic condition is the full set of relationships among the Five Elements in your BaZi — generation, control, regulation, and transformation. Who is helping you? Who is consuming you? Who is restraining you? Who is being restrained by you? Is your Day Master strong or weak within this system?
All of these questions require looking at the complete BaZi chart.
4. Strong and Weak: What Does Your Day Master Need?
In Chinese destiny analysis, the core of judging the state of the Day Master comes down to two words: strong and weak.
But “strong” and “weak” are not moral judgments. It is not that “strong is good” and “weak is bad.” They are simply descriptions of condition, used to help you understand what kind of support you need.
A strong Day Master:
This means your core energy is sufficient, or even excessive. What you need is guidance and appropriate regulation — allowing your abundant energy to have a suitable outlet, so that it does not become blocked, impulsive, or out of control.
Suitable directions include:
* Using the method of draining: if you belong to Wood and Wood is too strong, Fire can be used to drain Wood — transforming excessive Wood Qi into Fire, giving you more creativity and expressive power.
* Using the method of control: if you belong to Earth and Earth is too strong, Wood can be used to control Earth — allowing restraint and structure to stabilize the pattern.
A weak Day Master:
This means your core energy is insufficient and can be easily overconsumed. What you need is generation, support, and protection — enough energy to stand firmly and not be easily overwhelmed by the environment.
Suitable directions include:
* Using the method of generation: if you belong to Wood and Wood is too weak, Water can be used to generate Wood — allowing Water to nourish you and replenish your energy.
* Using the method of supportive assistance: if you belong to Fire and Fire is too weak, Wood can be used to assist it — Wood generates Fire, adding fuel to the flame.
This “direction of support that you need” is called Xi Yong Shen, or the favorable and useful element, in destiny analysis. It is one of the most important conclusions of a complete BaZi reading.
5. How Can You Use This Information?
Once you know your Day Master and your favorable direction, you can make many conscious adjustments in daily life:
| Area | Specific Applications |
|---|---|
| Career choices | If you benefit from Wood: education, culture, medicine, design. If you benefit from Metal: law, finance, technology, management. |
| Colors | If you benefit from Fire: use more red, purple, and orange. If you benefit from Water: use more black, deep blue, and dark gray. |
| Living direction | If you benefit from Wood: the east is suitable. If you benefit from Water: the north is suitable. If you benefit from Earth: the center or local region is suitable. |
| Jewelry | Choose materials and colors corresponding to the suitable Five Element attribute to support energetic balance. |
| Diet and daily rhythm | If you benefit from Fire: eat more warming foods. If you benefit from Water: focus on storage, nourishment, and supporting the kidneys in winter. |
These adjustments are not magic for “changing fate.” They help you align with your innate energetic structure, allowing you to exert effort in suitable directions and save energy in directions that are less suitable.
6. Find Your Day Master
After reading this article, you should now understand three things:
1. Your core Five Element is your Day Master. It comes from the Heavenly Stem of your birth day, not your zodiac animal.
2. The Day Master is only the starting point. What matters more is who helps you and who restrains you within the complete BaZi chart.
3. The truly useful information is Xi Yong Shen — what kind of support your Five Element structure needs.
So, what is your Day Master? What does your BaZi structure look like? What kind of support do you need?
To answer these questions, you only need to do one thing: find the Heavenly Stem of your birth day.
You can search online for a “BaZi calculator” and enter your birth year, month, day, and hour. The system will automatically generate your complete BaZi chart. Find the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar, compare it with the table above, and you will find your Five Element.
If you are not sure how to do this, or if you want to understand your BaZi structure more deeply, you can continue reading related materials or consult a professional destiny analyst.
