The Expression of the Shen Monkey Earthly Branch in BaZi

Shen is the ninth of the Twelve Earthly Branches. It corresponds to the Monkey in the Chinese zodiac and is therefore often called the Shen Monkey.

What Is the Shen Monkey Earthly Branch?

Shen is the ninth of the Twelve Earthly Branches and corresponds to the Monkey in the Chinese zodiac. BaZi analysis interprets the Earthly Branch Shen itself rather than the personality symbolism associated with the zodiac Monkey.

Shen belongs to Metal and carries Yang polarity. It corresponds to early autumn, the late-afternoon hours, and the west-southwestern direction. Shen contains three Hidden Stems: Geng Metal as its Primary Qi, together with Ren Water and Wu Earth.

It is a mixed-Qi branch representing the emergence of Metal Qi, the generation of Water by Metal, and Water concealed within Metal.

Basic Attributes

Traditional Imagery

The traditional image of the Shen Monkey is Metal Qi in early autumn.

After the Beginning of Autumn, summer heat gradually recedes, Metal Qi begins to emerge, and all things move from flourishing growth toward maturity and from expansion toward contraction.

Shen marks the beginning of Metal Qi and the opening of autumn. It represents the first emergence of the contracting and cutting quality associated with Metal, rather than the purity and maturity of Metal found in You.

In Chinese culture, the Monkey is associated with flexibility, quickness, intelligence, and changeability. The energy of Shen Monkey therefore carries a lively and adaptive quality.

Shen contains Ren Water, giving its Metal Qi a moist and fluid dimension and creating the structure of Metal generating Water. Metal produces Water, while Water moistens Metal, allowing the transition between the two elements to occur naturally.

Ren Water is Yang Water, and Geng Metal generates Ren Water through a same-polarity relationship. Shen therefore serves as a natural point of transformation from Metal into Water.

Wu Earth is also concealed within Shen, giving its Metal Qi an underlying capacity to support and contain.

This imagery shows that Shen carries the qualities of beginning and transition. It marks the beginning of autumn while also concealing the first emergence of winter Water, making it an important point of transformation between Metal and Water.

The Hidden Stems of Shen Monkey

Shen contains three Hidden Stems: Geng Metal, Ren Water, and Wu Earth.

Hidden Stems are the Heavenly Stems contained within an Earthly Branch and represent its deeper internal Qi. They differ from Heavenly Stems that appear openly in the chart.

The presence of Shen does not mean that Geng Metal, Ren Water, and Wu Earth will all operate visibly or with equal strength. Which Hidden Stems become active depends on whether they are seasonally supported, rooted, exposed in the Heavenly Stems, involved in relationships with other Earthly Branches, and supported by the complete chart structure.

Primary Qi: Geng Metal is the Primary Qi of Shen and determines its fundamental Metal nature. Geng Metal reaches the Officer stage in Shen, where Metal Qi becomes especially strong.

Growth Qi: Ren Water enters its Growth stage in Shen. Shen is therefore regarded as one of the places where Water Qi first begins to emerge. Geng Metal generates Ren Water, allowing Metal and Water to transform into one another and giving Shen Metal a moist quality.

Secondary Qi: Wu Earth represents the remaining Earth Qi that supports Metal. It gives Shen an underlying capacity to carry and sustain its Metal structure. Wu Earth reaches the Sickness stage in Shen, so its Earth Qi is comparatively weak.

Shen Monkey and the Five Element Relationships

Shen belongs primarily to Metal, but because it contains Ren Water, its expression within the Five Element system is more complex than that of a pure Metal branch.

Generation is not always beneficial, and control is not always harmful. The actual effect depends on relative strength, season, temperature, dryness and moisture, and the complete structure of the chart.

How the Hidden Stems of Shen Monkey Become Ten Gods

The Hidden Stems within Shen are Geng Metal as the Primary Qi, together with Ren Water and Wu Earth.

These Heavenly Stems are not inherently fixed Ten Gods. Each becomes a specific Ten God only in relation to a particular Day Master. The same Shen Monkey branch may therefore carry an entirely different combination of Ten Gods for different Day Masters.

Shen Monkey and Its Relationships with Other Earthly Branches

Shen forms several fundamental relationships with other Earthly Branches. These relationships should not be applied as fixed outcomes.

Whether they become significant depends on the complete chart, the season of birth, the strength of the branches involved, whether the related Heavenly Stems are exposed, and whether the overall structure supports the relationship.

The Central Role of Shen Month as the Month Command

Within a BaZi chart, the Month Branch holds a particularly important position. It represents the Five Element Qi governing the time of birth and serves as one of the main references for evaluating the relative strength of the elements in the chart.

Shen Month marks the beginning of autumn. Metal Qi becomes seasonally dominant, summer heat recedes, and the atmosphere gradually shifts toward the clarity and coolness of autumn.

Shen Month has three central influences.

First, temperature, dryness, and moisture. Shen Month belongs to early autumn. Summer heat has largely withdrawn, and autumn coolness begins to rise.

Shen is a Metal branch and contains Ren Water, so charts born in Shen Month often move toward a cooler and somewhat moister seasonal background. Fire is no longer necessarily the primary climatic influence, although the temperature of Water still requires attention.

If Metal and Water are excessive while Fire is weak, the chart may become overly cold.

Second, the relative strength of the Five Elements. Metal governs Shen Month and is seasonally strong.

Strong Metal generates Water, controls Wood, and consumes Earth. A Metal Day Master born in Shen Month receives seasonal support and may become relatively strong. A Wood Day Master may become relatively weak because Metal controls Wood. A Water Day Master may receive support from Metal and gain momentum.

These conclusions are not automatic. The actual degree of strength must still be judged from the complete chart. The Month Command is a major factor, but it is not the only factor.

Third, its relationship with the Day Master. The Metal Qi governing Shen Month takes on different Ten Gods roles for different Day Masters:

- for a Wood Day Master, it becomes Authority;

- for a Metal Day Master, it becomes Companion;

- for a Water Day Master, it becomes Resource;

- for a Fire Day Master, it becomes Wealth;

- for an Earth Day Master, it becomes Output.

The Month Command does not directly determine fortune or misfortune, but it provides the seasonal background of the entire chart.

Shen Month establishes the seasonal environment of early autumn, when Metal Qi first begins to rise. Final interpretation still requires the Day Master’s strength, Five Element circulation, structural pattern, and supportive directions to be considered together.

Common Misunderstandings

Does the presence of Shen mean that Metal must be strong?

Not necessarily. Shen is a Metal branch and represents the beginning of strong autumn Metal, but whether Metal is genuinely strong depends on the season, root Qi, support, combinations, clashes, and the complete chart.

If Shen Metal is strongly controlled by Fire or excessively drained by Water, its Metal Qi may still be weakened.

What is the difference between Shen and You?

Shen is Yang Metal, while You is Yin Metal.

Shen represents Metal Qi first emerging in early autumn, while You represents Metal Qi reaching maturity in mid-autumn. Shen contains Ren Water and Wu Earth, whereas You contains only Xin Metal.

Shen marks the beginning of Metal Qi, while You represents its seasonal peak.

Does the presence of Shen always mean that Fire is needed for refinement?

Not necessarily. Shen represents Metal in early autumn. If Metal is excessively strong and lacks restraint, Fire may indeed help refine and shape it.

However, if the original chart already contains sufficient Fire or Metal itself is not strong, additional Fire may not be needed.

Reading Shen Monkey Within the Complete Chart

The meaning of Shen Monkey within a chart changes according to its Pillar position, the season, which Hidden Stems are activated, the Ten God roles they take relative to the Day Master, its relationships with other Earthly Branches, and the overall circulation of the Five Elements.

Shen must therefore be interpreted together with the Day Master, Heavenly Stems, Hidden Stems, Ten Gods, Month Command, and the complete BaZi structure.
