What Are the Ten Gods in BaZi?
The Ten Gods in BaZi are not deities, but ten relationship names formed between the Day Master and other Heavenly Stems. The Ten Gods are the ten relationship names formed between the Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar that represents you — and the other Heavenly Stems in a BaZi chart. They are not deities or supernatural forces. They are a classification system based on the generating and controlling relationships of the Five Elements, together with yin-yang polarity. The Ten Gods are divided into five major groups: what generates me, known as Resource; what is the same as me, known as Companion; what I generate, known as Output; what I control, known as Wealth; and what controls me, known as Authority. Each group is then divided by yin and yang, forming ten specific relationships. The Ten Gods are an important tool in BaZi analysis for understanding support, expression, wealth, rules, pressure, peer relationships, and other dimensions of life.
The Ten Gods Are Not Gods
The name “Ten Gods” may sound as if it refers to ten deities or supernatural beings, but this is only a matter of terminology. In Chinese, the word “shen” here refers more to spirit, expression, or energetic quality, not to a religious god.
The true nature of the Ten Gods is this: they are the names of the relationships between the Day Master and other Heavenly Stems.
In BaZi, the Day Stem represents the chart owner. The Heavenly Stems of the Year, Month, and Hour Pillars — as well as the Heavenly Stems hidden inside the Earthly Branches — all form different Five Element and yin-yang relationships with the Day Stem. Ancient practitioners gave each type of relationship a name so these relationships could be described more clearly. Together, they are called the Ten Gods.
In the traditional Six Gods method of destiny analysis, the basic framework is formed by six core terms: Wealth, Officer, Resource, Eating God, Hurting Officer, and Killing. Because of yin-yang polarity, these six basic relationships further developed into ten specific BaZi terms, known as the Ten Gods. For this reason, the Ten Gods are also sometimes called the Six Gods. In essence, they are a system for classifying relationships.
How Are the Ten Gods Formed?
The Ten Gods are formed in two steps: first by Five Element relationship, then by yin-yang polarity.
Step one: determine the Five Element relationship
Using the Day Stem as the center, the other Heavenly Stems can be divided into five basic relationships according to Five Element generation and control:
- Same as me: Heavenly Stems with the same Five Element as the Day Stem — representing peers, the self, siblings, and similar energy
- Generates me: Heavenly Stems that generate the Day Stem — representing support, protection, and learning
- Generated by me: Heavenly Stems generated by the Day Stem — representing expression, creativity, and talent
- Controlled by me: Heavenly Stems controlled by the Day Stem — representing wealth, resources, and control
- Controls me: Heavenly Stems that control the Day Stem — representing rules, responsibility, and pressure
Step two: divide by yin and yang
The five basic relationships are then divided according to the yin-yang polarity of the Heavenly Stems — whether the Day Stem and the other Stem share the same polarity or have opposite polarity. Each relationship divides into two types:

The Five Major Energy Groups
Although the Ten Gods are divided into ten specific types, they can be grouped into five major energy directions. Each group represents a type of life area or energetic direction.
Resource — what generates me
The Five Element that generates and supports the Day Master. It represents support, protection, learning, inner strength, a sense of safety, elders, and mentors.
Companion — what is the same as me
Energy with the same Five Element as the Day Master. It represents the self, peers, companions, siblings, and competitive relationships.
Output — what I generate
The Five Element generated by the Day Master. It represents expression, creativity, talent, communication, children, ideas, and outward output.
Wealth — what I control
The Five Element controlled by the Day Master. It represents wealth, resources, material matters, control, assets, and practical interests.
Authority — what controls me
The Five Element that controls the Day Master. It represents rules, responsibility, pressure, management, authority, discipline, and superiors.
How Are the Ten Gods Distributed in a BaZi Chart?
In the Four Pillars of BaZi, each pillar has one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. The Heavenly Stems directly form Ten Gods relationships, while the Earthly Branches express Ten Gods through their Hidden Stems.
A typical BaZi chart has eight characters. Among them, there are four Heavenly Stems: the Year Stem, Month Stem, Day Stem, and Hour Stem. The Day Stem is the self, while the other three visible Heavenly Stems directly form Ten Gods relationships with the Day Stem. The Hidden Stems inside the Earthly Branches provide a deeper layer of Ten Gods information.
Ten Gods analysis is not about simply counting how many of each God appears. It is about examining the relationships, strength, and combinations among these Ten Gods — how they interact with one another and how they influence the energetic state of the Day Master.
Why Are the Ten Gods Important in BaZi?
The importance of the Ten Gods appears on two levels.
First, they translate abstract Five Element relationships into understandable life language.
The Five Elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — they are the energies themselves. The Ten Gods describe the specific relationships formed between these energies and the person represented by the Day Master. “Wood” is only an element, but “Direct Resource” helps you understand that this Wood, in relation to you, may represent support, protection, and learning.
Second, the Ten Gods are a bridge between chart structure and life areas.
Through the Ten Gods, a BaZi chart can be interpreted across different dimensions of life:
- Strong Resource may suggest advantages in learning and inner growth.
- Strong Wealth may suggest strengths in resource management and material accumulation.
- Strong Authority may suggest strengths in following rules and carrying responsibility.
- Strong Output may suggest strengths in expression and creativity.
- Strong Companion may suggest strengths in teamwork, peer relationships, or competition.
Of course, these must always be judged together with Day Master strength and the overall Five Element flow of the chart. A chart should not be interpreted only by counting one Ten God.
