The Expression of the You Rooster Earthly Branch in BaZi

You is the tenth of the Twelve Earthly Branches. It corresponds to the Rooster in the Chinese zodiac and is therefore often called the You Rooster.

What Is the You Rooster Earthly Branch?

You is the tenth of the Twelve Earthly Branches and corresponds to the Rooster in the Chinese zodiac. BaZi analysis interprets the Earthly Branch You itself rather than the personality symbolism associated with the zodiac Rooster.

You belongs to Metal and carries Yin polarity. It corresponds to mid-autumn, sunset, and the western direction. You contains only one Hidden Stem: Xin Metal. It is therefore often regarded as a pure Metal branch and as the Earthly Branch in which Metal Qi is at its purest and most mature.

Basic Attributes

Traditional Imagery

The traditional image of the You Rooster is Metal Qi in mid-autumn.

Around the autumn equinox, all things reach maturity, and Metal Qi becomes strongest, purest, and most contracted. You is neither the beginning of Metal Qi found in Shen nor the transitional stage of late autumn represented by Xu. It is the point at which Metal Qi is at its purest and most refined.

You Metal is concentrated and powerful, representing the culmination of autumn Metal.

In Chinese culture, the Rooster is associated with light and timekeeping. Its crow announces the dawn and marks the rhythm of daily life. You Hour occurs at dusk, when day gives way to night, and therefore carries the symbolism of transition and boundaries.

You belongs to Metal and is traditionally associated with the refined essence of Yin. It carries the images of contraction, formation, and refinement.

Another important feature of You is its structural purity. You contains only Xin Metal and no other Hidden Stems. It is one of the few pure branches among the Twelve Earthly Branches, together with Zi and Mao.

This purity gives You a clear and concentrated direction of expression within a BaZi chart.

This imagery shows that You carries the qualities of purity and completion. Metal Qi has reached its fullest stage and forms a complete structure without requiring other Qi to define it.

The Hidden Stem of You Rooster

You contains only one Hidden Stem: Xin Metal. It is therefore often regarded as a pure Metal branch.

Hidden Stems are the Heavenly Stems contained within an Earthly Branch and represent its deeper internal Qi. They differ from Heavenly Stems that appear openly in the chart.

The presence of You does not mean that Xin Metal will necessarily operate visibly or strongly. Whether Xin Metal is activated depends on whether it is seasonally supported, rooted, exposed in the Heavenly Stems, involved in relationships with other Earthly Branches, and supported by the complete chart structure.

Primary Qi: Xin Metal is the Primary Qi of You and determines its fundamental Metal nature. Xin Metal reaches the Officer stage in You, where Metal Qi becomes especially strong and pure.

You contains no Residual Qi or other secondary forms of Branch Qi.

You Rooster and the Five Element Relationships

You belongs to Metal and is one of the purest Metal branches among the Twelve Earthly Branches. Its relationships within the Five Element system are as follows:

Generation is not always beneficial, and control is not always harmful. The actual effect depends on relative strength, season, temperature, dryness and moisture, and the complete structure of the chart.

How the Hidden Stem of You Rooster Becomes a Ten God

The Hidden Stem within You is Xin Metal. Xin Metal is not inherently one fixed Ten God. It becomes a specific Ten God only in relation to a particular Day Master.

The same You Rooster branch may therefore carry entirely different Ten Gods meanings for different Day Masters.

You Rooster and Its Relationships with Other Earthly Branches

You forms several fundamental relationships with other Earthly Branches. These relationships should not be applied as fixed outcomes.

Whether they become significant depends on the complete chart, the season of birth, the strength of the branches involved, whether the related Heavenly Stems are exposed, and whether the overall structure supports the relationship.

The Central Role of You Month as the Month Command

Within a BaZi chart, the Month Branch holds a particularly important position. It represents the Five Element Qi governing the time of birth and serves as one of the main references for evaluating the relative strength of the elements in the chart.

You Month belongs to mid-autumn. Metal Qi is seasonally dominant and reaches its fullest stage, making it one of the purest periods of Metal during the year.

You Month has three central influences.

First, temperature, dryness, and moisture. You Month occurs around the autumn equinox. Metal Qi is strong, and the climate becomes cooler and drier.

You is a pure Metal branch, so charts born in You Month often tend toward clarity, coolness, and dryness. Water may become an important climatic influence because it can moisten dryness and prevent Metal Qi from becoming excessively dry.

If the original chart contains little or no Water while Fire is weak, the structure may become too dry. If Water is excessive while Fire is weak, the chart may instead become too cold.

Second, the relative strength of the Five Elements. Metal governs You Month and is seasonally strong.

Strong Metal generates Water, controls Wood, and consumes Earth. A Metal Day Master born in You Month receives seasonal support and may become exceptionally strong. A Wood Day Master may become relatively weak because Metal controls Wood. A Water Day Master may receive support from Metal and gain momentum.

These conclusions are not automatic. The actual degree of strength must still be judged from the complete chart. The Month Command is a major factor, but it is not the only factor.

Third, its relationship with the Day Master. The Metal Qi governing You Month takes on different Ten Gods roles for different Day Masters:

- for a Wood Day Master, it becomes Authority;

- for a Metal Day Master, it becomes Companion;

- for a Water Day Master, it becomes Resource;

- for a Fire Day Master, it becomes Wealth;

- for an Earth Day Master, it becomes Output.

The Month Command does not directly determine fortune or misfortune, but it provides the seasonal background of the entire chart.

You Month establishes the seasonal environment of the chart at the point when Metal Qi is at its purest. Final interpretation still requires the Day Master’s strength, Five Element circulation, structural pattern, and supportive directions to be considered together.

Common Misunderstandings

Does the presence of You mean that Metal must be strong?

Not necessarily. You is a Metal branch and represents Metal at its seasonal peak, but whether Metal is genuinely strong depends on the season, root Qi, support, combinations, clashes, and the complete chart.

If You Metal is strongly affected by the Mao–You clash or the chart contains excessive Fire, its Metal Qi may still be weakened.

What is the difference between You and Shen?

Shen is Yang Metal, while You is Yin Metal.

Shen represents Metal Qi first emerging in early autumn, while You represents Metal Qi reaching its fullest stage in mid-autumn. Shen contains Ren Water and Wu Earth, whereas You contains only Xin Metal.

Shen marks the beginning of Metal Qi, while You represents its seasonal peak. The two therefore differ significantly in both purity and degree.

Does the presence of You always mean that Fire is needed for refinement?

Not necessarily. You is a pure Metal branch, and Fire may indeed be useful when Metal is excessively strong and lacks restraint.

However, if the original chart already contains sufficient Fire or Metal itself is not strong, additional Fire may not be needed. Fire may help refine You Metal, but excessive Fire may also damage it.

Reading You Rooster Within the Complete Chart

The meaning of You Rooster within a chart changes according to its Pillar position, the season, whether its Hidden Stem is activated, the Ten God role it takes relative to the Day Master, its relationships with other Earthly Branches, and the overall circulation of the Five Elements.

You must therefore be interpreted together with the Day Master, Heavenly Stems, Hidden Stems, Ten Gods, Month Command, and the complete BaZi structure.
