What Is Companion Energy in BaZi?
Companion Energy in BaZi is the energy that shares the same Five Element as the Day Master. This article explains how Peer and Rob Wealth form through Five Element sameness and yin-yang polarity, and how Companion relates to self-awareness, peers, siblings, cooperation, competition, and the Day Master’s own strength.
Companion Energy is “what is the same as me” — the energy with the same Five Element as the Day Master. In the Ten Gods system, it represents peers, companions, competition, self-awareness, and related directions. Companion Energy is divided into two types: Peer, which has the same yin-yang polarity as the Day Master and represents equal peers and companions; and Rob Wealth, which has the opposite yin-yang polarity from the Day Master and represents peer relationships with a stronger competitive quality. Companion is an important dimension in a BaZi chart for understanding the Day Master’s own strength, interpersonal relationships, and competitive state.
How Is Companion Energy Formed?
In BaZi theory, Companion Energy is formed through this logic: using the Day Master as the center, any Heavenly Stem or Hidden Stem with the same Five Element as the Day Master becomes the Day Master’s Companion.
There are two steps to identifying Companion.
Step one: look at the Five Element relationship
Within the Five Elements, the element that is the same as the Day Master is Companion. In other words:
- If the Day Master is Wood, other Wood Heavenly Stems or Hidden Stems are Companion.
- If the Day Master is Fire, other Fire Heavenly Stems or Hidden Stems are Companion.
- If the Day Master is Earth, other Earth Heavenly Stems or Hidden Stems are Companion.
- If the Day Master is Metal, other Metal Heavenly Stems or Hidden Stems are Companion.
- If the Day Master is Water, other Water Heavenly Stems or Hidden Stems are Companion.
Step two: divide by yin and yang
After identifying the Five Element that is “the same as me,” we then look at the yin-yang relationship between that element and the Day Master:

For example, if the Day Master is Jia Wood, which is Yang Wood:

- Yi Wood, which is Yin Wood, and Jia Wood, which is Yang Wood — opposite polarity → Rob Wealth
In a BaZi chart, Companion does not only come from visible Heavenly Stems. It can also come from the Hidden Stems inside the Earthly Branches. The Heavenly Stems of the Year, Month, and Hour Pillars, as well as the Hidden Stems inside each Earthly Branch, can all become Companion if their Five Element is the same as the Day Master.
What Does Companion Energy Represent?
The core image of Companion Energy is “same kind.” In life terms, it represents several major areas.
1. Self and self-awareness
Companion represents a person’s sense of self and self-positioning. It reflects how a person sees themselves and how they establish their own presence in the world. People with strong Companion often have clear self-awareness and a strong sense of identity. People with weak Companion may need to define their position through external relationships.
2. Companions and friends
Companion represents peers, friends, colleagues, partners — people who are on the same level or in the same field as you. Peer more often represents equal cooperative relationships, while Rob Wealth more often represents peer relationships with a competitive quality.
3. Siblings
In the family relationship system, Companion represents siblings, cousins, and relatives of the same generation. Peer often corresponds to brothers or same-gender peers, while Rob Wealth often corresponds to sisters or opposite-gender peers.
4. Competition and cooperation
Companion can be both a collaborator and a competitor. People with strong Companion often have a strong presence in groups, but they may also experience competition with peers because of strong self-awareness.
Peer vs. Rob Wealth: Two Types of Same-Kind Relationships
Peer and Rob Wealth both belong to Companion Energy, but their energetic qualities and interpersonal patterns are clearly different.

Peer: equal and stable same-kind energy
Peer is energy that is exactly the same as the Day Master. It represents equal cooperation among those of the same kind — without hierarchy, dominance, or submission. People with Peer often value friendship, cooperation, and team spirit.
When Peer is strong in the chart, the Day Master has enough strength to support itself. However, it may also become difficult to compromise because the person strongly insists on their own position.
Rob Wealth: same-kind energy with competition
Rob Wealth is energy with the same Five Element as the Day Master but opposite yin-yang polarity. It represents competition among those of the same kind. Although both sides may share a similar path or field, they may also compete with each other when resources are limited.
When Rob Wealth is strong in the chart, the Day Master may be competitive and enterprising. However, in cooperation, the person may overlook boundaries or become overly involved in other people’s affairs.
Balance and Imbalance in Companion Energy
When Companion is too strong:
When Companion is overly strong in the chart, the Day Master may become too self-centered. This may show as:
- stubbornness and difficulty accepting different opinions
- competition and conflict in interpersonal relationships
- cooperation becoming unstable because of excessive forcefulness
- disputes with others over resources
When Companion is too weak:
When Companion is insufficient in the chart, the Day Master may lack enough self-awareness and social support. This may show as:
- lack of security and a tendency to depend on others
- weak presence in groups
- lack of peer support when under pressure
- over-accommodation of others and loss of personal position
When Companion is balanced:
When Companion is neither too strong nor too weak, a person can maintain a sense of self-identity without becoming overly self-centered. They can take responsibility independently while also cooperating with others; they are neither too forceful nor too yielding.
How Companion Energy Interacts with Other Energy Groups
Companion → Output
Companion supports Output. Companion represents self-awareness and one’s own energy reserve, while Output represents expression and creation. The strength of Companion is expressed through Output. When a person has enough inner energy, it can be transformed into effective expression and creativity. If Companion is too strong but Output is weak, the person may have energy but lack an effective way to express it. If Output is strong but Companion is weak, expression may be abundant, but endurance may be insufficient.
Companion ← Authority
Authority, the energy that controls me, controls Companion, the energy that is the same as me. This is an important mechanism for regulating competition and selfhood in the chart. Authority represents rules, restraint, and external authority. When Companion is too strong, appropriate Authority can provide structure and regulation. The balance between Authority and Companion partly affects a person’s sense of proportion in cooperation and competition.

Common Misunderstandings
Is Peer good and Rob Wealth bad?
No. Peer and Rob Wealth are simply two different types of Companion, each with its own suitable context. Peer is suited to situations that require equal cooperation, while Rob Wealth is suited to situations that require competitive awareness. Neither is absolutely good or bad.
Is stronger Companion always better?
No. Excessive Companion can lead to overly strong self-awareness and difficulty in cooperation. Companion works best when it is balanced — providing a sense of belonging without overpowering others.
Can Peer and Rob Wealth appear together?
Yes. A chart may contain both Peer and Rob Wealth. Together, they form the Day Master’s same-kind relationship system. They can complement each other: Peer provides a stable foundation for cooperation, while Rob Wealth stimulates appropriate competitive awareness.
