What Is Authority Energy in BaZi?

Authority Energy is “what controls me” — the Five Element energy that restrains the Day Master. In the Ten Gods system, it represents rules, responsibility, pressure, management, power, and social order. Authority Energy is divided into two types: Direct Officer, which has the opposite yin-yang polarity from the Day Master and represents rules, law, superiors, and reputation; and Seven Killings, which has the same yin-yang polarity as the Day Master and represents challenge, pressure, breakthrough, and unconventional authority. Authority is an important dimension in a BaZi chart for understanding how a person faces rules, carries responsibility, handles pressure, and relates to power.

How Is Authority Energy Formed?

In BaZi theory, Authority Energy is formed through this logic: using the Day Master as the center, any Five Element that controls the Day Master becomes the Day Master’s Authority.

There are two steps to identifying Authority.

Step one: look at the Five Element controlling relationship

The controlling cycle of the Five Elements is:

Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood

Within this cycle:

- Metal controls Wood, so for a Wood Day Master, Metal is Authority.

- Water controls Fire, so for a Fire Day Master, Water is Authority.

- Wood controls Earth, so for an Earth Day Master, Wood is Authority.

- Fire controls Metal, so for a Metal Day Master, Fire is Authority.

- Earth controls Water, so for a Water Day Master, Earth is Authority.

Step two: divide by yin and yang

After identifying the element that “controls me,” we then look at the yin-yang relationship between that element and the Day Master:

For example, if the Day Master is Jia Wood, which is Yang Wood:

- Xin Metal, which is Yin Metal, controls Jia Wood, which is Yang Wood — opposite polarity → Direct Officer

- Geng Metal, which is Yang Metal, controls Jia Wood, which is Yang Wood — same polarity → Seven Killings

In a BaZi chart, Authority does not only come from visible Heavenly Stems. It can also come from the Hidden Stems inside the Earthly Branches. The Heavenly Stems of the Year, Month, and Hour Pillars, as well as the Hidden Stems inside each Earthly Branch, can all become Authority if their Five Element belongs to the element that controls the Day Master.

What Does Authority Energy Represent?

The core image of Authority Energy is rules and restraint. In life terms, it represents several major areas.

1. Rules and law

Authority represents all forms of externally imposed rules and order — laws, systems, company regulations, social norms, and similar structures. Direct Officer leans toward maintaining and following established order, while Seven Killings leans toward the execution of rules and breakthrough under pressure.

2. Responsibility and pressure

Authority is the energy that controls the Day Master, so it naturally carries the quality of pressure. It represents the responsibilities a person must carry and the pressure they must face. Direct Officer leans toward the question of “what should be done,” while Seven Killings leans toward the urgency of “what must be done.”

3. Management and power

Authority represents management ability and power. Direct Officer represents management status obtained through formal channels, such as institutional positions and official authority. Seven Killings represents influence obtained through ability and breakthrough, such as the personal leadership of an entrepreneur.

4. Superiors and elders

In relationships, Authority represents superiors, leaders, and figures of authority. Direct Officer more often corresponds to formal supervisors and official institutions. Seven Killings more often corresponds to informal authority or influential figures.

Direct Officer vs. Seven Killings: Two Forms of Authority

Direct Officer and Seven Killings both belong to Authority Energy, but the way they apply pressure to the Day Master and the effects they produce are clearly different.

Direct Officer: gentle and orderly rules

Direct Officer is a controlling force with the opposite yin-yang polarity from the Day Master, so its pressure is relatively gentle, orderly, and predictable. Direct Officer represents the normal order of society — law, systems, and the hierarchy within organizations.

People with strong Direct Officer often respect rules, are good at coordination, and are suited to development within existing systems. They carry a natural “official” quality — they know how to operate within established rules and are often suited to civil service, management in large institutions, law-related professions, and similar paths.

Seven Killings: strong and challenging pressure

Seven Killings is a controlling force with the same yin-yang polarity as the Day Master, so its pressure is strong, direct, and challenging. Seven Killings represents crisis, competition, and unconventional demands. It asks for quick response and decisive action.

People with strong Seven Killings often have courage, are willing to face challenges, and are suited to surviving in pressure and change. They carry a natural sense of breakthrough — they are not afraid to break convention and are willing to take responsibility. This can suit entrepreneurship, decision-making roles, and high-risk high-reward fields.

Balance and Imbalance in Authority Energy

When Authority is too strong:

When Authority is overly strong in the chart, the Day Master may carry excessive pressure. This may show as:

- being under long-term high pressure, with a tendency toward anxiety and tension

- being overly focused on rules and norms, with insufficient flexibility

- shrinking back in front of authority and having a weaker sense of self-efficacy

- in some cases, pressure becoming too heavy and affecting physical or mental well-being

When Authority is too weak:

When Authority is insufficient in the chart, the Day Master may lack effective rules and restraint. This may show as:

- lack of self-discipline and insufficient sense of order

- not placing enough importance on responsibility and commitment

- discomfort in environments that require rule-following

- lack of direction in career development because of insufficient restraint

When Authority is balanced:

When Authority is neither too strong nor too weak, a person can find balance between rules and freedom. They can follow necessary order without losing themselves under excessive pressure.

How Authority Energy Interacts with Other Energy Groups

Wealth → Authority

Wealth, the energy controlled by the Day Master, supports Authority, the energy that controls the Day Master. Wealth represents resources and money, while Authority represents status and power. This relationship reveals a certain logic: wealth can be transformed into social status and power resources. Through accumulating wealth, a person may gain higher social position and greater influence. But this also means that one source of Authority’s strength comes from the nourishment of Wealth — when Wealth is strong, Authority has a source.

Authority → Companion

Authority, the energy that controls me, controls Companion, the energy that is the same as me. Authority represents rules and restraint, while Companion represents peers and competition. This relationship reflects how social order regulates individual behavior. Authority can restrain excessive competition and resource争夺 among Companion energies. In business management and team organization, clear systems, represented by Authority, can regulate employee behavior, represented by Companion, and prevent internal competition from losing control. Common Misunderstandings

Is Direct Officer good and Seven Killings bad?

No. Direct Officer and Seven Killings are simply two different types of Authority, each with its own suitable context. In a stable system, Direct Officer is an advantage. In an environment that requires breakthrough and challenge, Seven Killings is an advantage. There is no absolute good or bad.

Does stronger Authority mean easier success?

Not necessarily. When Authority is too strong and the Day Master is too weak, pressure may become a burden. The key is whether the Day Master can “carry” Authority. Only when the Day Master has enough strength can Authority potentially become career achievement.

Is Seven Killings a “bad god”?

No. Seven Killings simply represents strong pressure. It is not inherently auspicious or inauspicious. Many successful people have strong Seven Killings in their charts. It can stimulate a person’s explosive power and decisiveness under pressure.
