A 10-Year Life Cycle, known in Chinese as Da Yun（大运）, is a stage of approximately ten years represented by one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. It does not replace the natal chart. Instead, it adds a longer-term layer of time-based influence that interacts with the original Four Pillars.
The natal chart establishes the underlying structure, the 10-Year Life Cycle describes the broader conditions of a life stage, and Annual Influence adds the conditions of a particular year.
You may have seen your own BaZi chart before: the Four Pillars of the year, month, day, and hour—eight characters that remain unchanged throughout your life. Yet different stages of life can feel entirely different. The circumstances you face at twenty are not the same as those you face at forty. Your resources, responsibilities, choices, and priorities all change.
If the natal chart never changes, why does life change?
The answer lies in the 10-Year Life Cycles.
In traditional BaZi, Da Yun（大运）, translated here as 10-Year Life Cycle, is the system used to observe changes across longer stages of life. Each cycle is represented by one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch and usually lasts for approximately ten years.
One point must be made clear from the beginning:
A 10-Year Life Cycle does not replace your natal chart. It introduces a new pair of Stem-and-Branch influences over a longer stage of life, continuously interacting with the structure already present in your chart.
The natal chart establishes the underlying structure. The 10-Year Life Cycle changes the stage you are moving through. Annual Influence adjusts the conditions within that stage from year to year.
This article explains what a 10-Year Life Cycle is, how it interacts with the natal chart, and why the same cycle can mean completely different things for different people.
What Does a 10-Year Life Cycle Mean in BaZi?
In BaZi, a 10-Year Life Cycle is a stage of approximately ten years during which a particular Stem-and-Branch combination becomes active.
Each cycle consists of:
- One Heavenly Stem: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, or Gui
- One Earthly Branch: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, or Hai
A person moves through a sequence of these cycles throughout life. The sequence is derived from the Month Pillar and progresses either forward or backward according to traditional calculation rules. The age at which the first cycle begins varies from chart to chart.
The central principle is simple:
A 10-Year Life Cycle is not a second natal chart, nor is it a correction to the original chart. It is an additional layer of time-based influence.
Your natal chart—the Four Pillars formed by the year, month, day, and hour of birth—does not change. A 10-Year Life Cycle adds new conditions and relationships around that structure. It does not create a new version of you.
If the Natal Chart Does Not Change, Why Does Life Change?
This is one of the central questions behind the BaZi system of time cycles.
Your natal chart represents the fundamental structure established at birth. It can be compared to a constitution: certain inherent tendencies, internal tensions, available strengths, and structural limitations. This underlying structure remains with you throughout life.
But life does not unfold in a straight line. The situations you face at twenty are different from those you face at fifty. The resources available to you change, the responsibilities you carry change, and the challenges you must respond to also change.
The 10-Year Life Cycles describe these shifts in long-term conditions.
A cycle does not change who you are. It changes the kind of environment in which your natal structure is operating during that stage.
Imagine it this way:
* Natal chart = the structure of a ship
* 10-Year Life Cycle = the waters through which the ship travels during that decade
The ship remains the same ship, but it behaves differently on a river, near the coast, or in the open ocean. Some waters are calm and supportive. Others contain strong currents and rough conditions. The structure of the ship determines how it responds, while the waters shape what it must face during that stage.
The natal chart remains the foundation, but the forces acting upon it change over time. A 10-Year Life Cycle may strengthen an existing element, introduce a new element or Ten God relationship, or activate connections and tensions within the original chart.
A cycle may introduce influences that are not visibly present in the natal chart. However, the effect of those influences still depends on the original structure: what the chart can receive, support, transform, use, or resist.
What Is a 10-Year Life Cycle Made Of?
A complete cycle is not just one character or one element. Each Stem-and-Branch combination contains several layers.

A common mistake is to see the Earthly Branch Wu（午） and immediately conclude, “This is a Fire cycle.”
Wu is principally associated with Fire, but it also contains Ding Fire and Ji Earth as Hidden Stems. The full cycle also includes a Heavenly Stem. Its actual effect further depends on whether the Stem and Branch combine, clash, punish, or harm any part of the natal chart.
When you see a 10-Year Life Cycle, do not reduce it to a single element.
How Does a 10-Year Life Cycle Interact with the Natal Chart?
The interaction between a cycle and the natal chart takes place on several levels.
Five Element level
A cycle may:
* strengthen one element until it becomes a dominant force during the decade
* continue an existing generating pathway within the natal chart
* intensify an existing controlling relationship
* provide an outlet for an element that was previously blocked
* disturb a structure that was previously close to balance
* introduce an element that was weak or absent in the natal chart
Ten God level
The same element forms different Ten God relationships depending on the Day Master.
It is therefore not enough to identify the element of a cycle. You must also understand which Ten God relationship it forms with your Day Master.
Stem-and-Branch relationship level
The Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of the cycle may interact with the Four Pillars through relationships such as:
* Combination: Stems or Branches joining and changing the direction of their interaction
* Clash: direct opposition between Branches
* Punishment: friction, pressure, or internal tension
* Harm: indirect weakening or hidden disruption
* Rooting: an Earthly Branch providing support for a Heavenly Stem
These relationships help determine which parts of the natal chart become more active and which areas experience greater movement or pressure.
Pattern level
A 10-Year Life Cycle does not normally erase the original Pattern of the natal chart. The natal structure remains the starting point of interpretation.
However, a cycle may:
* strengthen the original direction of the Pattern and make it more visible
* weaken an existing balance and bring a previously secondary element to the surface
* make a particular supportive direction more important during that decade
* alter how an otherwise supportive element functions under the conditions of that cycle
* temporarily create conditions in which a different structural tendency becomes more prominent
The cycle must therefore be interpreted through the natal Pattern rather than separately from it.
If a Supportive Element Appears in a Cycle, Is It Automatically a Good Cycle?
Not necessarily.
The presence of a supportive element in a 10-Year Life Cycle does not mean that the cycle will be beneficial in every area of life. The complete Stem-and-Branch combination, the natal Pattern, and the changing Annual Influences within the decade must all be considered.
The same element can produce more than one effect
Wood may be supportive for a particular chart, but Wood also generates Fire. If additional Fire creates imbalance in that chart, the arrival of Wood may strengthen an unwanted pathway at the same time.
The Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch must be read separately and together
A cycle may have a Wood Heavenly Stem and a Metal Earthly Branch. The decade therefore contains both Wood and Metal relationships. The entire cycle cannot be judged from the Stem alone or the Branch alone.
The Earthly Branch contains Hidden Stems
A cycle may appear to be associated mainly with Water, while its Earthly Branch also contains Wood or Earth. Those Hidden Stems also participate in the interaction.
The cycle may interact differently with different Pillars
The same Shen Metal cycle might clash with Yin Wood in one Pillar, combine with Si Fire in another, or harm Hai Water elsewhere in the chart. The meaning changes according to the natal structure and the Pillars involved.
Each year adds another layer
The overall direction of a 10-Year Life Cycle may be supportive, while one particular year within it is especially difficult. Conversely, a generally challenging cycle may still contain comparatively favourable years.
When you see your current cycle, do not immediately jump to a fixed conclusion. It is the starting point of a time-based analysis, not the final answer.
Why Does the Same Cycle Affect Different People Differently?
Suppose two people both enter a Bing-Wu（丙午） cycle. The Heavenly Stem is Bing Fire, and the Earthly Branch is Wu Fire. At first glance, both people appear to be entering a decade dominated by Fire.
Yet their experiences may be completely different because their Day Masters and natal structures are different.
The same Fire element forms different Ten God relationships with different Day Masters:

For a Wood Day Master, Fire belongs to Output Energy. The decade may therefore place greater emphasis on creativity, expression, production, or making something visible.
For a Water Day Master, Fire belongs to Wealth Energy. The person may become more closely involved with money, resources, transactions, management, or tangible results.
For a Metal Day Master, Fire belongs to Authority Energy. The decade may bring greater responsibility, rules, pressure, institutional structures, or questions of power.
The same force forms a different relationship with each person.
Even two people with the same Day Master can experience the cycle differently. The strength of the Day Master, the amount of Fire already present, the distribution of the other elements, the Month Branch, and the direction of the original Pattern all change how the cycle functions.
Whenever you see the element of a 10-Year Life Cycle, ask:
What does this element represent in relation to my Day Master, and what does my natal chart do with it?
How Should You Read Your Own 10-Year Life Cycle?
When you look at your cycle information, it is best to read it in the following order:

A 10-Year Life Cycle describes the broader conditions of a decade. It does not mean that one specific event must occur. To understand a particular year, you must also examine how the Annual Influence is layered over the cycle and the natal chart.
What Is the Relationship Between a 10-Year Life Cycle and Annual Influence?
A 10-Year Life Cycle does not operate in isolation. Together with Annual Influence, it forms the two main time-based layers used in BaZi interpretation.
The 10-Year Life Cycle provides the broader background of a stage, while Annual Influence introduces the immediate conditions of a particular year. Neither should be interpreted independently from the natal chart.
Another way to imagine it:
* Natal chart = your constitution
* 10-Year Life Cycle = the climate zone in which you live during that decade
* Annual Influence = the weather conditions of a particular year
Your constitution remains unchanged. The broader climate shifts from one cycle to the next, while the weather changes from year to year within that climate.
The cycle changes the long-term background. Annual Influence changes the immediate conditions. Your actual experience emerges from the interaction of the natal chart, the current cycle, and the current year.
Common Misunderstandings
Does everything remain the same throughout the ten-year cycle?
No. The cycle provides the broader background of the decade, but each year introduces a different Annual Influence. Every year therefore produces a different expression within the same stage.
Does a Wealth cycle guarantee financial gain?
No. Wealth describes a type of relationship involving resources, management, exchange, responsibility, and material outcomes. It does not guarantee that money will automatically arrive. The strength and condition of the Wealth influence, the structure of the natal chart, and the Annual Influence must all be considered.
Does a supportive-element cycle mean everything will go smoothly?
No. A supportive element may improve one part of the chart while the same Stem-and-Branch combination creates pressure elsewhere. “Supportive” does not mean that every part of life automatically becomes favourable.
Does a 10-Year Life Cycle change the natal chart?
No. The natal chart remains unchanged. The cycle is a temporary layer of time-based influence interacting with the original structure.
Can the cycle introduce something that is absent from the natal chart?
Yes. A cycle may introduce an element, Ten God, or Stem-and-Branch relationship that is not visibly present in the natal chart. However, its actual effect still depends on the natal structure and the relationships it forms after entering the chart.
