What Do the Five Single-Current Patterns Mean in BaZi?

In BaZi analysis, a Single-Current Pattern is a special chart structure that is easily misunderstood.

Some people ask, “Does a Single-Current Pattern simply mean that the Day Master is very strong?” Others ask, “What is the difference between a Single-Current Pattern and a Follow-Strong Pattern?”

They are not the same.

A Single-Current Pattern is fundamentally different from both an ordinary strong Day Master and a Follow-Strong Pattern.

An ordinary strong Day Master means that the Day Master receives sufficient support. A Follow-Strong Pattern means that the entire chart is aligned with the Day Master. A Single-Current Pattern means that the Day Master’s element has formed an exceptionally pure and concentrated current, with almost the entire chart moving in the same elemental direction.

An analogy may help:

- Ordinary strong Day Master: A person is physically strong.

- Follow-Strong Pattern: The person is strong, and the entire surrounding environment supports them.

- Single-Current Pattern: The person is not merely carried by the current—the entire river is formed from the same force.

The requirements for establishing a true Single-Current Pattern are extremely strict. Once the Pattern is established, its interpretive logic moves beyond ordinary strong-versus-weak analysis. The chart should not be conventionally strengthened, restrained, or balanced. Instead, its dominant force should be followed and given an appropriate outlet through Output Energy.

This article explains the five Single-Current Patterns, the conditions required to establish them, and the central principle of following the dominant current while allowing its Qi to be expressed.

1. What Does a Single-Current Pattern Mean?

The Chinese word Zhuan（专） means concentrated or pure, while Wang（旺） means flourishing or extremely strong.

A Single-Current Pattern therefore means:

The Five Element associated with the Day Master occupies an overwhelmingly dominant position in the chart. Almost all Four Pillars consist of the same element or elements that generate and support it. The entire chart moves in one direction, forming a unified elemental current.

The central principle of a Single-Current Pattern is:

Follow the dominant current and release its Qi through Output Energy rather than opposing it.

When one element has become exceptionally pure and dominant, attempting to impose conventional balance may damage the Pattern.

The appropriate approach is to give this force an outlet through the element generated by the Day Master. This allows the concentrated Qi to move outward through expression and production rather than being directly controlled or consumed by opposing forces.

2. What Conditions Are Required for a Single-Current Pattern?

The conditions for establishing a Single-Current Pattern are extremely strict. Only a genuinely pure and complete structure should be classified in this way. A partial formation or loosely matching chart does not qualify.

The principal requirements include:

- The Day Master must belong to the element represented by the Single-Current Pattern.

- The Month Branch must fall within one of the seasonal or structural positions permitted for that Pattern.

- The Earthly Branches must form a complete elemental configuration, without any of the four Branches falling outside the dominant current.

- The Year, Month, and Hour Stems may reveal only the same element or Resource Energy that generates it. Output only the same element or Resource, Wealth, or Authority Energy must not appear in a way that destroys the purity of the Pattern.

In simple terms, almost the entire chart must consist of one element or the element that generates it.

Once a sufficiently strong opposing force appears, the purity of the Single-Current Pattern is disrupted.

3. The Five Single-Current Patterns

The five Single-Current Patterns are named according to the Five Element forming the dominant current.

① Qu Zhi Pattern — Exclusive Wood

- Day Master: Jia Wood or Yi Wood

- Eligible Month Branches: Yin, Mao, Hai, or Wei

- Earthly Branch formation: Yin–Mao–Chen Three-Meeting Wood formation, or Hai–Mao–Wei Three-Harmony Wood formation

- Supportive direction: Fire, as Output Energy

When Wood has already formed a dominant current, Fire provides an outlet for its Qi.

Wood generates Fire, allowing the concentrated Wood energy to transform into light, warmth, expression, and visible activity rather than remaining accumulated without direction.

② Yan Shang Pattern — Exclusive Fire

- Day Master: Bing Fire or Ding Fire

- Eligible Month Branches: Si, Wu, Yin, or Xu

- Earthly Branch formation: Si–Wu–Wei Three-Meeting Fire formation, or Yin–Wu–Xu Three-Harmony Fire formation

- Supportive direction: Earth, as Output Energy

When Fire has already formed a dominant current, Earth provides an outlet for its Qi.

Fire generates Earth, allowing the concentrated Fire energy to become stable, productive, and materially expressed rather than burning without form.

③ Jia Se Pattern — Exclusive Earth

- Day Master: Wu Earth or Ji Earth

- Eligible Month Branches: Chen, Xu, Chou, or Wei

- Earthly Branch formation: Chen, Xu, Chou, and Wei are all present or form a sufficiently complete Earth current

- Supportive direction: Metal, as Output Energy

When Earth has already formed a dominant current, Metal provides an outlet for its Qi.

Earth generates Metal, allowing the concentrated Earth energy to produce structure, refinement, and tangible results rather than remaining densely accumulated.

④ Cong Ge Pattern — Exclusive Metal

- Day Master: Geng Metal or Xin Metal

- Eligible Month Branches: Shen, You, Si, or Chou

- Earthly Branch formation: Shen–You–Xu Three-Meeting Metal formation, or Si–You–Chou Three-Harmony Metal formation

- Supportive direction: Water, as Output Energy

When Metal has already formed a dominant current, Water provides an outlet for its Qi.

Metal generates Water, allowing the concentrated Metal energy to flow, circulate, and express itself rather than remaining rigidly accumulated.

⑤ Run Xia Pattern — Exclusive Water

- Day Master: Ren Water or Gui Water

- Eligible Month Branches: Hai, Zi, Shen, or Chen

- Earthly Branch formation: Hai–Zi–Chou Three-Meeting Water formation, or Shen–Zi–Chen Three-Harmony Water formation

- Supportive direction: Wood, as Output Energy

When Water has already formed a dominant current, Wood provides an outlet for its Qi.

Water generates Wood, allowing the concentrated Water energy to nourish growth and development rather than becoming excessive or uncontrolled.

4. How Does a Single-Current Pattern Differ from a Follow-Strong Pattern and an Ordinary Strong Day Master?

These three types of strength are easily confused.

A Single-Current Pattern is the purest of these structures.

It is not only strong but also highly concentrated. Almost no opposing force is present, and the Day Master’s element becomes the single dominant current of the chart.

5. What Does a Single-Current Pattern Mean in Practice?

① Ordinary Strength-Based Balancing Does Not Apply

This is the most direct interpretation.

An ordinary strong Day Master generally uses Output and Wealth Energy to release or consume excess strength.

A Single-Current Pattern follows a more specific logic. Because one element has become exceptionally pure and dominant, the chart should not be treated through conventional balancing methods that directly oppose or consume that current.

The priority is to preserve the dominant structure and give its Qi a natural outlet.

② Output Energy Becomes the Main Supportive Direction

The direction of a Single-Current Pattern is release.

The concentrated force should be given an outlet through the element generated by the Day Master. In Ten God terms, this means using Output Energy as the principal supportive direction.

- Exclusive Wood → Fire, because Wood generates Fire

- Exclusive Fire → Earth, because Fire generates Earth

- Exclusive Earth → Metal, because Earth generates Metal

- Exclusive Metal → Water, because Metal generates Water

- Exclusive Water → Wood, because Water generates Wood

Output Energy represents expression, production, creativity, skill, and the transformation of internal Qi into visible results.

A Single-Current Pattern needs to put its concentrated energy into motion rather than allowing it to remain stored without direction.

③ 10-Year Life Cycles and Annual Influence May Change How the Pattern Functions

The natal structure of a Single-Current Pattern follows a unified current.

When a 10-Year Life Cycle or Annual Influence continues to generate the dominant element or provides an appropriate Output pathway, the Pattern may operate more smoothly.

When strong controlling or consuming forces enter, the Pattern may be disrupted or broken.

Therefore, even when the natal chart forms a genuine Single-Current Pattern, its expression can still change under different time cycles.

6. Common Misunderstandings

Misunderstanding 1: A Single-Current Pattern Simply Means That the Day Master Is Very Strong

A Single-Current Pattern requires more than strength.

It requires purity and structural dominance. The Month Branch, Earthly Branches, and Heavenly Stems must all point toward the same elemental direction. A loosely matching or partially formed chart does not qualify.

Misunderstanding 2: All Five Single-Current Patterns Use the Same Element

They do not.

Each Pattern has a different Output direction:

- Exclusive Wood uses Fire

- Exclusive Fire uses Earth

- Exclusive Earth uses Metal

- Exclusive Metal uses Water

- Exclusive Water uses Wood

These directions cannot be used interchangeably.

Misunderstanding 3: Wealth or Authority Energy Can Be Used to Balance a Single-Current Pattern

Not under the ordinary logic of a genuine Single-Current Pattern.

Once the Pattern is firmly established, using strong controlling or consuming forces may damage its purity. Its principal direction is to follow the dominant current and release it through Output Energy.

Misunderstanding 4: A Single-Current Pattern Remains Unchanged Throughout Life

A Single-Current Pattern describes the natal structure, but 10-Year Life Cycles and Annual Influence can change how that structure is expressed.

When opposing forces become sufficiently strong during a particular stage, the Pattern may experience disruption or temporary instability.
